Science
Students at Coromandel Valley Primary School receive one 50-minute lesson of science per week with a specialist teacher. To ensure curriculum coverage, Science is also integrated into units of work, in the classroom.
Science content includes the three strands: science understanding (biology, chemistry, earth & space sciences and physics), science inquiry skills, and science as a human endeavour. The three strands of the curriculum are interrelated, and the content is taught in an integrated way.
Students work collaboratively to make predictions, identify trends, collect data and make observations in and out of the science classroom and with the effective use of ICT. They reflect on their investigations, communicate their ideas and observations within a team environment and provide peer feedback for growth.
In addition to specialist Science lessons, students are provided with many opportunities to engage in science learning outside of the classroom. These include participating in the Oliphant Science Awards (open to all students), participating in the Green Adelaide Youth Environmental Leaders Program (by application for students in Years 5 & 6), the STEM professionals in schools partnership, and other events that occur throughout the year.
