Schools certainly are busy places!
Book Week Celebration
Friday of Week 5, Coromandel Valley came alive with students and staff enthusiastically participating in our annual Book Week Dress Up Day parade. The weather was perfect, and we were thrilled to have our school community join in and enjoy the Book Week parade and performance in the gym.
Congratulations to everyone on their fabulous costumes and a big thank you to families who supported their child/ren with some very creative costumes.
Special mention and thanks to Michelle O’Connell, Stacey Stutterd and Sue Matthews for organising the performance showcasing the many talented students we have here at Coromandel Valley P.S.
SSO Appreciation Week
Week 5, we took a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the invaluable presence of our School Service Officers (SSOs) and the positive impact they have on the lives of students, teachers and families.
We extended our gratitude for the work our SSOs undertake across all aspects of school life, ranging from administrative tasks and financial matters to maintaining our library and ICT networks, nurturing student well-being, tending to the school garden and grounds, and providing essential learning support.
Thank you to Sue, Karen, Jenny, Nicole, Karmi, Catherine, Vicky, Christian, Kathryn, Suzie, David, Josh, Yvonne, Chloe, Jen, Samantha, Marieke and Keith – We hope you enjoyed the week.
Year 6 PYP Exhibition
The IB PYP Exhibition is a culminating learning experience, designed for the final year of the IB Primary Years Program. From Weeks 1 – 7 of Term 3, all Year 6 students have participated in the Exhibition process, led by Kate O'Driscoll and the Year 6 teachers. The Exhibition process involves students using a range of skills to inquire into a chosen topic and present their learning to the broader school community.
Students shared their completed work Tuesday evening with family and friends. Congratulations to all students and staff on their hard work throughout this process.
Festival of Music Choir
On Wednesday, week 5 the students involved with the Festival of Music went to a whole group rehearsal at Magic Millions. This was a rehearsal for the group singing on our night. They are very much looking forward to performing at the Festival Theatre on Thursday 19th September.
Father’s Day Stall
Our Father’s Day Stall was a great success, offering a wonderful selection of gifts for $5.00. This was a great opportunity for students to choose something special for their dads or another significant person in their life. Thank you to Jodie and all the other volunteers who supported on the day or who previously wrapped gifts.
Reception Father’s Day Breakfast and Activities
The Reception classes hosted a special pancake breakfast the Friday before Father’s Day. Lots of Dads, Grandads and special people enjoyed receiving gifts and spending time doing activities in class while also enjoying a pancake breakfast.
Students and adults all had a great time.
Below is the proposed Materials and Services Fee for 2025 that has been revised by the Governing Council Finance Committee and recommended by Governing Council at our meeting Tuesday 10th September. There is no change to the fees from 2024.
If you have any questions, you are welcome to email:
- Governing Council Chairperson, Sam Neville, at sam.neville@outlook.com
- Treasurer, Ben Sanderson, at sanderson268@schools.sa.edu.au
- Principal, Rob Warncken at warncken732@schools.sa.edu.au
As in previous years the Governing Council has voted to poll the school families so that the full charge of $400 is legally recoverable. Without a positive vote from polling we would legally only be able to recover the prescribed amount of $300. This would severely impact our 2025 budget for classroom, library and ICT. All schools have to option to charge above the prescribed amount. Please note that anyone who receives the Schoolcard benefit will not be impacted in any way by this and, if eligible in 2025, will still receive the full Schoolcard benefit.
“The prescribed amount is the amount set out in Regulation 81 of the Education and Children’s Services Regulations that schools can charge as a compulsory component of their materials and services charge without the requirement to poll the school community. The school must however undertake the process of completing the notice as outlined in step 4 of this instruction. The prescribed amount for 2025 for a primary student is $300.”
Please note, in the 2024/2025 State Budget it was announced the Materials and Services Charge Rebate for the 2025 school year has increased to $200 per student. This amount was $100 in 2024.
Very soon you will receive an email asking you to vote online to accept or not accept the recommendation from Governing Council to legally recover the full Materials and Services fee of $400.

Fathers' Day and Special Persons' Day Celebration
Our reception students celebrated Fathers' Day and Special Persons' Day with a joyful morning of pancakes, hot Milo, and crafts! Students shared a delicious breakfast with their dads or special guests, enjoying time together in a warm, fun atmosphere.
After breakfast, students and their special visitors worked together on a craft activity, creating a personalised keepsake to remember the day. It was wonderful to see the creativity and teamwork on display!
A big thank you to all who attended and made the day so special for our students!
RSPCA Visit: Learning About Our Pets' Five Freedoms
Our reception students were excited to welcome Vicki from the RSPCA AWARE Education Program. She taught us about the "Five Freedoms" that all pets deserve, helping our students understand the importance of kindness and care for animals.
The Five Freedoms are:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury, or disease
- Freedom to express normal behaviour
- Freedom from fear and distress
Through fun activities and engaging discussions, Vicki showed the students how we can ensure our pets are healthy, happy, and safe. It was a fantastic learning experience, and we are grateful to Vicki and the RSPCA for helping us become more responsible pet owners!
Reception Students Visit Cleland Wildlife Park
On Wednesday of Week 7 our reception students had an amazing day at Cleland Wildlife Park, enjoying perfect weather and plenty of exciting encounters with wildlife. The students had the chance to pet koalas, touch snakes, and feed kangaroos, making it a truly hands-on learning experience.
The day was filled with smiles and wonder as the students learned more about Australia's incredible animals. A big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly—we couldn't have done it without your amazing support!
YEAR 1 MAGAREY ORCHARD EXCURSION
On Thursday 15th August, all year 1 students visited Magarey Orchard, as part of their Farm to Table unit of inquiry. Children were taken on a guided tour of the orchard and were able to see the apple process first-hand. They also enjoyed a delicious apple or pear from the orchard.
At Magarey Orchard I saw water tanks, Alfie the dog, trees and apples. I enjoyed the Nashi Pear, because they were juicy. I’m still wondering how many people work there
Alfie
I saw lots of trees, cherry pickers, netting and trays. I enjoyed walking around, because I saw lots of trees. I’m still wondering how pears are made.
Amos
I saw netting that looked like sushi rolls, apples, lots of trees and tractors. I enjoyed all the trees, because they were so big and old. I’m still wondering how many trees there are in total.
Emmet
I saw fruit trees and a water tank and a tractor and a cherry picker. I enjoyed eating the fruit, because it was yummy. I’m still wondering how much they pick the trees.

Year 2 Excursions: Exploring and Connecting with Our Local Places
In Term 3, Year 2 students delved into how people connect with the stories and features of different places. Each class participated in two local field trips—one to Frank Smith Park and another to Blackwood Forest.
At Frank Smith Park, students observed and sketched various features, including natural, constructed, and managed elements. They reflected on the park’s history and took note of native plants, which they learned about from Uncle Tamaru, who shared insights into their traditional uses.
Their next adventure took them to Blackwood Forest, where they explored the natural environment and engaged in nature play. They connected with Country by sharing their class Acknowledgments on Kaurna land and practised respect for the environment throughout their visit.
During these trips, students also reflected on the vital work of the Friends of Blackwood Forest and Friends of Frank Smith Park. These dedicated volunteers ensure that these special places are maintained for everyone to enjoy.
These experiences provided students with a valuable opportunity to connect with their local surroundings and deepen their understanding of the history and cultural significance of these places.
What a wonderful experience it was, earlier this term, for our 3/4 cohort to welcome Zinia King, a talented artist, to our school for an exciting art incursion! During her visit, Zinia taught us how to draw a character using a variety of artistic techniques, inspiring creativity and imagination in all of us. The incursion was filled with fun and enthusiasm as we put our new skills to the test. The highlight for many was the chance to stand in line and have Zinia autograph our very own artwork—a special memento of an unforgettable day!
3/4L, 3/4B, 3/4S, 3/4M, 3/4G
The year 5's have completed their inquiry topic on The Creative Process, which focuses on using specific techniques artists use as well as reflecting and providing feedback for improvement.
During week 4, the 6 classes enjoyed a wonderful excursion experience visiting the city for a self-guided tour of the City East and City South Street Art Trail, and a guided tour of the Art Gallery of South Australia.
The excursion strongly supported our PYP Exhibition by considering how the arts provoke thought about, and action on, local and global issues. While we were there, we viewed various art forms and mediums to consider how the arts communicate ideas, perspectives and meaning.
We used train and tram transport to navigate our excursion, and we enjoyed lunch outside the Art Gallery on North Terrace.
All students from CVPS represented the school exceptionally well and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

CORO-LYMPICS 2024
The Coro colours were flying with celebration. For the first time ever, we began the Read Aloud A Thon for the CORO-LYMPICS.Many students eagerly practiced their reading aloud and recorded their times proficiently. We had over 40 competitors who read aloud for over 10,000 minutes in total. That is over 160 hours’ worth. What a great effort by everyone!
Remember, it is highly valuable to read aloud and have someone follow along with the text and actively listen. The benefits include:
- Building vocabulary
- Improving comprehension
- Strengthening fluency
- Improving working memory
Our medal winners, who read the most aloud to an adult in their year level were:
Reception: Penelope
Year 1: Chloe
Year 2: Quinn
Year 3: Eddie
Year 4: Ellie
Year 5: Ethan
Year 6: Isla
Congratulations to all participants; your time has been invaluable for your skills. If you didn’t enter this year, hopefully you can join us next time…and remember to keep reading aloud to improve your skills!

Book Week Lunchtime Activities
Throughout the week, at lunch time, many students came to enjoy drawing, crafts and a collection of short movies. All the students had a great time!
Illustrator Lauren Mullinder’s visit
On Tuesday we were inspired by the talents of Lauren Mullinder. She shared her experience in the book making process; when it comes to illustrating manuscripts. Her tips and tricks to drawing and creating characters was very cool. The students then had an opportunity to draw along with Lauren, as each group thought of a character, setting and scenario to illustrate. There was a cat in a mud bath being stolen by monkeys, a space exploring kangaroo whose rocket is stolen by aliens, a cow and squirrel dining on burgers in a fancy restaurant and a frog trying on hats in the outback. Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed creating their artwork!
Perform Education Performance
The R – 2 classes were entertained with acting, singing and dancing in the performance “Maybe a Miracle”. They all had fun and enjoyed the CBCA’s shortlisted stories that were interwoven into an engaging storyline.
The Grand Book Parade
We again were amazed by the inspirational costumes and the magic that books bring to all of us. The Grand Book Parade was another success, with the weather being kind and the costumes so bright and colourful. It was lovely to once again enjoy this community event with so many of our family’s special people. Seeing the books and characters that inspire each student is always so exciting.
Complementing our Book Parade with the amazing Musical Extravaganza, it was definitely another day to remember! It was lovely to see so many people enjoying the talents of our students, and we know the students really enjoyed having you all there!
Thank you to everyone, for making 2024’s Book Week so magical!
Happy reading everyone! J

During term 3, both our Puggles (new Receptions) and our Year 1 classes have learnt about Kimochis (Japanese for Feelings). During the term we are have met 5 different Kimochis characters who helped us about learn our emotions and how to be good friends:
- Cloud has feelings that change like the weather. We call this being moody and we can go from happy to sad or mad quickly! It’s OK to have these BIG feelings and we need to focus on how we behave through them. Cloud’s key message is: It’s OK to be MAD but it’s not OK to be MEAN!
- Bug has a soft voice and finds it hard to ask for help or seek out friends to play with. Bug needs to put a brave feeling in front of shy so that a left out feeling doesn’t come his way. Bug’s key message is: Put your BRAVE in front!
- Huggtopus (nickname is Huggs) is full of energy and loves people! Huggs can be so affectionate that people find it a little bit over the top and uncomfortable. Huggs’ key message is: For SILLY to be fun, it must be fun for everyone!
- Lovie Dove is the most caring of all the Kimochis characters. This kindness and care can turn into worry as she overthinks situations and is concerned for her friends. She has a baby (Turtle Dove) under her wing that she provides a safe home for and is available in times of trouble and big feelings! She is a wise character and helps others with her wisdom! Lovey’s key message is: Who can you PUT UNDER YOUR WING and WHOSE WING ARE YOU UNDER?
- Cat is a strong leader and has lots of really great ideas! Cat can be really bossy with these ideas and needs to be reminded to choose helpful words! When we make a mistake it’s OK to ask to redo; to try again. Cat teaches us how to say sorry and repair relationships. Kat’s key message is: Redo hurtful moments and choose helpful words.
The Puggles had an introduction to each of the characters, looked at their different feelings, and then completed some awesome Kimochis colouring. Check it out below:
The Year 1 students worked through an online session about the characters each week and helped them work out how to deal with their emotions. The students participated in some crafts and were able to make their own Kimochis characters. Check out their creations!
In Week 6, Coromandel Valley PS attended the Orienteering School Relay Champs, in which 42 of our Year 4, 5, and 6 students competed.
The event was held at Lochiel Park in Campbelltown. Although the forecast was for rain, we were fortunate to have great weather.
Students have been learning about orienteering in PE and this was a good chance to put their knowledge and skills to the test. Our school finished a respectable 2nd in the primary boys category and 3rd in the primary girls category.
All our participants should be congratulated on doing a great job and for their impeccable behaviour throughout the day.
Special mention to our fastest competitors:
- Year 6 boy: Lucas
- Year 6 girl: Mila
- Year 5 boy: Sebastian
- Year 5 girl: Charlotte
- Year 4 boy: Izzac
- Year 4 girl: Alice
- Fastest overall: Lucas
A big thank you to all the parents who assisted with supervision and organisation of students, and transporting equipment. Excursions like this can’t run without your help and we are always grateful to you for generously volunteering your time.

National Science Week at Coromandel Valley Primary School looked like:
Extra lunchtime activities – Minecraft Club: create a habitat, nature painting with water colours, building minibeasts, hosted an incursion from Save Our Wildlife Foundation (SOWFI) planting local natives and an escape room in the library.
We partnered with the Biological Society of South Australia and the Friends of Frank Smith Park to provide an after-school community event, identifying native bird species in our area. Students used binoculars, Green Adelaide identification sheets and made predictions about what birds might be living in this area. The bird specialists from BSSA informed students how they could care for these species and what changes they could make at home and school, to ensure their survival.
Thank you to Jodie, Megan and Robin for cooking the after school bbq snack, it went down a treat!
Coromandel Valley Primary School had 41 projects entered the Oliphant Science Awards for 2024. Congratulations to the following students: Elise, Eddy, Hamish, Poppy, Sophie, Lacey, Phoenix, Lily, Ava, Molly, Freya, Remy, Lucas, Jeffrey, Aurelia, Isla, Maddie, Sahishnu, Eliza, Beau, Van, Emilia, Archie, Charlotte, Charlotte, Maia, Molly, Dexter, Gwyneth, Jude, Joseph, Lola, Scarlett, Asher, Patrick, Flynn, Isla, Lydia, Max, Isla, Amelia, Sienna, Lucy and Darcy.

The Blackwood Rotary Club invited us to submit art pieces once again this year to be included in their annual Art Show.
The Art Show exhibited a range of art including paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography from both adult and student artists.
We submitted a range of photography prints from our Year 6 students’ recent Photography Inquiry and these were very well received.
Congratulations to Georgia who won FIRST PLACE with her beautiful sunset photo, titled “Gave me the blues, then the purple-pink skies”.
Congratulations to Duke who won SECOND PLACE with his thought-provoking photo, titled “Luck doesn’t last forever”.
We certainly have some budding photographers amongst our students!
Last Thursday Coro was buzzing with buskers, and all for a great cause! Thank you to everyone for coming along and donating your time and money; for supporting both our performers and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
We had an amazing afternoon of entertainment and enjoyment and raised a whopping big total of $400.85. We would like to thank everyone who made this day so special. Thank you to our wonderfully brave and talented students who performed for our community and thank you also to everyone who donated and helped us raise valuable funds for new resources for students in remote areas.

The team is having a BBQ fundraiser at Drakes Blackwood on Saturday 21st September so if you are out shopping on Saturday please come and buy a sausage to support our team.
SAPSASA FOOTBALL (SOCCER) CARNIVAL
Our Southern Heights Boys Football Team recently played in the 3-day State Carnival against the other districts.
Four Coro boys were on the team – Joel, Archer, Evan, and Julian.
The team did quite well, playing in Division 1 and finishing in 4th place. They won 5 games and lost 3.
Well done boys.
The year three netball team has had a great season! A lot of girls joined the team this year which has lead to new friendships, learning new skills and a really successful season. We won the majority of our games and all of the team showed amazing teamwork and sportsmanship at all of their games.
Steph (Coach)
Coromandel Valley PS Year 4 netball team consisted of eight little superstars in Annie, Lexi, Sienna, Lucy, Aria, Amelia, Indie and Amber. This season the team came up against some tough opponents and tricky situations, however, each and every player never gave up, always supported each other both on and off the court and always brought their biggest smiles to every single early Saturday morning game, rain, hail or shine. We had a couple of brand new netballers on the team this year, who were supported by our more experienced players and the incredible growth from each and every student was a joy to witness. We would also like to thank the families of the Year 4 netball team for their unwavering support throughout the season - it really was a whole team effort every week and your encouragement towards this team has been a huge part of the girls' success and growth this season.
Sally and Amy (Coaches)
What a great season for the year 4/5 Friday team! Throughout the season the girls demonstrated outstanding teamwork, fairness, skills and sportsmanship! New friendships were forged and old ones strengthened, providing each other with support on and off the court. We had some really tough games early on, and as the season progressed their improvement and commitment as a team was evident as they posed a challenge to opposing teams. Well done team, you should be really proud of yourselves!
Amber (Coach)
The final chapter for our year 6 netball girls…
It’s been a fantastic season for our combined year 5/6 Friday night netball team. It’s brought many wins and tough losses, fantastic shooting, centre court and defending skills, but more importantly brought all the girls together for their final year at Coro.
The team consisted of Ava Richards, Georgia Ogilvie, Isabella King, Macie Wells, Eliza Schinella, Taylor Dillon, Anissa Coats, Ruby De Jagar, Freya Townsend and Amber Mayo. Most of these girls have played since year 2 days, so to see them grow each and every year with skills, confidence and abilities has been the most rewarding memory for all us families, and personally, as their coach for most of those years, to take away.
The girls showed up every week for training, rain, hail or shine and always put 100% in come game day. Thank you to the Coro OSHC cheer squads when we played at home.
School sports take a village of people to run, we are very thankful to Janita Bentley for making each year run smoothly by organising schools, court allocations, umpires, uniforms, fixtures and trophies…the list goes on!
Good luck to all the girls in their high school journeys, keep playing sport and being amazing!
Best wishes, Lisa Richards (Coach)
Closing out their final year with a nail-biter of a game the Saturday Year 6 netball girls have shown just how far they have come. A team of veterans, second/third-year netballers and newcomers who have an amazing amount of skill between them, Lola, Peyton, Kaydah, Isla, Ruby, Sarah, Evy and Olivia.
Often taking to the court with no spare players they fought hard with no rest almost every game as they found their groove as a team. It takes determination and strength of character to keep fighting all season but that's just what these girls did week in and week out. I'm proud of them for working so hard and finally getting that elusive win.
I have only coached these girls for one year but what a privilege to witness the blood sweat and tears shed on the court, the smiles at training every week, that final home game, the last training session and the final seconds of your Coro netball years. Amazing memories!
Thanks to everyone who supported the girls and me throughout the year.
I wish you all the best of luck on your new adventure!
Amy Randell (Coach)
90 soccer superstars - 7 awesome teams - 11 (mostly sunny) matches ….. this is CVPS Soccer 2024!!
This year CVPS fielded 7 teams from Years 1 to 6 in the Southern Districts Junior Soccer Association’s schools sport competition. With a huge amount of players, we had some big teams, and a massive shout-out goes to the team managers and coaches for organising them… not always an easy task or what they signed up for!
Congratulations to our Under 7 team on their first year of school sport which they attacked with enthusiasm and fun. Nik Bell brought a wealth of knowledge as a coach and Tamra Ulpen and Lara Glasson had them well-organised in their role as team managers. Our year two team enjoyed another great year. Rachelle De Fazio stepped up as coach with the assistance of two year six students, Joseph Schober and Darcy Grabb. Nat Franklin did a great job as team manager again.
The year threes are coming together as a great little team with coach Steve Richards. These guys are really showing off their skills and enjoying their soccer. Thanks to Emma Harrison for keeping them organised.
We have a huge cohort of passionate year fours fielding two teams this year. They had the early start at our home games but were always there with a smile. Thanks to coaches Dylan Drewitt, Steve Webster and Phil Lomax and team managers Brooke Hamden, Cassie Smith and Megan Hepden.
The year five group has been together for quite a few years now, playing under coaches Angelica and Adam Crabb. Such an enthusiastic group who love the game so much they, at times, literally jumped at the opportunity to play a second game with the year 6s when it arose. Thanks to Richard Steel for stepping up as team manager this year.
Our year sixes thoroughly enjoyed their final year of school soccer. Many of these kids have been playing since year two and the growth and development we’ve seen in them over the years has been fantastic. This season they were coached by Paul Gardner and organised by Jane Harrison. Congratulations on representing your school so well for so long.
All of the teams have had the opportunity to participate in a night carnival at Bowker Street throughout the season. The kids relish playing under lights in a round robin event and buying hot chips at half-time. It’s a great night despite the cold weather, late night and exhausted children!
Our final game of the year was held at Frank Smith with sausage sizzle and trophy presentations after the game. It was a fantastic atmosphere once again. The Coro soccer community is a fantastic one to be part of and the kids do a fantastic job representing their school with excellent displays of sportsmanship and mateship. We always see smiling faces and great participation (even when filing in for the opposing team). To the legends who are our coaches and team managers, soccer wouldn’t exist without the likes of you putting up your hands to volunteer so a massive thank you from all the children and us for stepping up into these roles, sharing your knowledge, skills and organisational prowess, you really are the best.
Sadly, 2024 is the last year for our families at Coro, so we will be handing over the reins next year. We’re proud of the wonderful community that is Coro soccer and are confident that the good times and strong participation will continue in 2025 and beyond.
Nikki and Kate - CVPS Soccer Coordinators
