Wow! What a fantastic turnout we had for our Book Week Dress Up and Grandparents Day. The weather was perfect, and we were thrilled to have our school community join in and enjoy the Book Week parade and performance in the gym.
Congratulations to everyone on their fabulous costumes, and thank you to all families for supporting our much-loved tradition.
Special mention and thanks to Michelle O’Connell, Stacey Stuttard and Sue Matthews for organising the performance showcasing the many talented students we have here at Coromandel Valley P.S.
Student Led Conferences
On Tuesday 13th September, student led conferences will begin at 3:30pm. The afternoon will conclude at 6:30pm.
At the student led open day, the teacher is present but acts only as a facilitator, if required. It is highly likely that there will be more than one family in your child’s classroom at any one time. Please remember this is an opportunity to share with your child. If you have specific questions for the class teacher these will need to be addressed separately at another time.
You will also visit other specialist program locations (PE in the Gym, Science, Japanese, Performing Arts and Library) in the school where student learning takes place. Your child will take you to these locations as part of their sharing.
Parents will receive information from their child’s class teacher outlining the process for the afternoon. This will include the opportunity to nominate a time that you are available to attend.
School Services Officer (SSO) Week
A special mention from last week to all of our school service officers (SSOs) who each day, positively contribute to school life at Coro. Our SSOs undertake a wide range of roles in our school, in the areas of administration and learning support.
Our admin team of SSOs help manage, coordinate, plan and run a wide range of school operations, including: front-of-house duties, first aid, finance, facilities, grounds, special events and much more – the list is endless.
Our learning support team of SSOs keep our library functioning well, provide additional learning support for students working in small groups as well as providing one to one support for others.
We are grateful to have such a dedicated team of SSOs at Coro and thank them for their dedication and hard work

TRAFFIC AND CHURCH CAR PARKING REMINDER
Now that the kiss and drop zone is back in use school traffic is much heavier on Main Road and we have observed some parents breaching traffic regulations. Mitcham council regularly checks school sites and will issue fines accordingly.
Please do not use the bus stop slip lane as a waiting area!
Parents are reminded that we have a contract with the church that provides parking for our families on the provision that we adhere to guidelines. Thank you to those families who are putting the safety of all as a first priority.
Parents who use the Church car park in the morning must park their car and accompany children into the school grounds. In the afternoon, parents must park and walk into school grounds to collect their children.
Parking next to the church building is strictly prohibited as this impacts the church foundations. The orange cones around the church are placed there to prevent parking. Unfortunately, we have had to ask vehicles to move regularly. A breach of the conditions could jeopardise our agreement with the church.
Please share the above information with Grandparents or other family members who are responsible for dropping off and picking up students from the school as this too is an issue.

Celebrating CVPS’ love of BOOKS!
What a wonderful way to finish an awesome Book Week! The sun was shining, and everyone was smiling. The costumes were incredible, and the talent was outstanding. Thank you to everyone who was able to come along and enjoy our Book Week spectacular of our parade and concert. For those who were unable to make the day, we hope you were able to experience the livestreaming and video coverage. The students certainly enjoyed the day and we hope you loved it as much as we did!
Book Week saw our school celebrating books in so many different ways. From Book Picnics to author talks, performances to competition. And who could forget our show stopping concert that concluded the festivities, after the most amazing costume parade ever….CORO certainly experienced it all!
Competition X 3 …..
Many competitions were held over the last few weeks and our winners have been announced. We had students rushing around the school, using their detective skills and book knowledge to recognise names of books and various favourite character. We also had a competition to “design your own book cover”. The students created new front covers and wrote their own blurb for their favourite book. Congratulations to the students for their amazing entries.

Some of our competition winners!
Book Picnics….
The students from all year levels joined in to celebrate CBCA’s book Week and get to know the books in each category. We explored all the shortlisted books through our Book Picnics. Finding our own favourites and voting for those we thought may be the winners. Each category‘s criteria was explored to understand what qualities each were looking for.
Elephants and more….
Did you know, you can draw an elephant by starting with the simple pear shape? Well Mandy Foot, a highly talented local author and illustrator, showed us how. She ran workshops for the students in years 4 -7. Everyone was captivated throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions and wholeheartedly enjoying the opportunity to draw their very own elephant….beginning with …you guessed it…..a pear!
Story Quest….
The students in Reception to year 3 enjoyed a Story Quest performance. They were engaged in the drama filled performance, watching and dancing along with the actors who dramatically shared three of the shortlisted books through drama.
Dreaming through masks….
Many classes across the school, joined in with the activity provided by Mitcham Library. Each class was given masks to decorate. They all had a great time using many creative techniques and materials to make theirs unique. The masks are now on display at the Mitcham Library and you may like to go and check them out with your family. Here is a picture of 5BB proudly showing off their creations!
The Grand Finale….
We finished the week on a high, with an amazingly warm winters day, the parade was enjoyed by many, along with the concert of talented students. The costumes were colourful and creative. The smiles were large and infectious! Everyone had the best day ever! Thank you to everyone who made this day such a wonderful success. Many beautiful memories were made and will be remembered for years to come.
Student Highlights….

YEAR 1 MAGAREY ORCHARD EXCURSION
As part or our inquiry topic into How We Organise Ourselves we have been learning about the process the food goes through to get to our table. We visited Magarey Orchard to look at their processes from farm to table.
I saw apple trees and pine trees. I enjoyed my fruit, because it was yummy. I’m still wondering why they only grow in Spring? - Lewis
I saw the apple trees blowing in the wind. I enjoyed the apples, they were sweet. I’m still wondering about the process of the apple. - Vivienne
I saw netting, tractors, birds, apple trees and pears. I enjoyed learning the apple process, because I learnt something new. I’m still wondering why the fruit gets so big? - Dakota
I saw lots of bare trees and a cold room full of fruit. I enjoyed eating, being warm and having a good time. I’m still wondering is a nashi pear is an apple or a pear. – Zoe
I saw an old truck and an old shed. I enjoyed going into the cold room and eating my apple. I’m still wondering if the farm is going to get bigger? – Len
On Thursday August 25, Year 6 students visited Hopgood Theatre to see the Patch Theatre Production of ‘Home’. Whilst the production is typically targeted at younger audiences, Home provided an opportunity for students to consider how different elements of art are used collaboratively, to stage a show. Students made connections between the show and the Year 6 PYP Exhibition inquiry into The Arts, and its connection to culture, history and world events. Whilst the visual effects and set design were notable, students’ favourite part of the show was audience participation, with three Coro kids chosen to go on stage and improvise with the actors. Students will use their new understandings as they collaborate with other students, to produce an exhibit before the end of term.

On Tuesday 30th August, our PSMF choir travelled to Magic Millions at Morphettville race course to sing through their repertoire for the festival of music performance coming up soon. They sang with the festival orchestra, heard talented soloists and even heard the junk squad!
It's sounding fantastic and we look forward to seeing them perform at festival theatre on Saturday 17th September.

This year our Wellbeing Leaders will be organising shoeboxes as part of Operation Christmas Child – where shoeboxes filled with gifts are given to children in developing nations who may otherwise not receive a Christmas gift.
We are asking for the school community to donate items towards these boxes, which will then be packed by the Wellbeing Leaders.
A drop off point for gifts will be in the school library, and can be dropped off until the end of week 8 (Friday 16 September).
Please consider buying a gift for a boy or girl aged 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 in the following categories:
- Clothing (t-shirt, socks, socks, shoes etc)
- Personal Care items (toothbrush, combs, soap, hairbrush)
- School supplies (pens, pencils, sharpeners, notebooks, colouring books etc)
- Accessories (sunglasses, hair accessories, jewellery etc)
- WOW items and Toys (stuffed animals, dolls, toy cars, skipping ropes, yo-yos etc)
Please DO NOT include:
- Lollies, toothpaste, gum, used or damaged items, war-related items, food, liquids, lotions, glass or breakable items.
If you have shoe boxes that you could donate, we need them too!
Many thanks.

The Coro Chess Club meets every Thursday lunchtime in the Performing Arts room. Chess Club is free and all levels of experience are welcome to come along.
The term 3 Interschool Chess Tournament is being held on Tuesday the 20th of September at Southern Vales Christian College, and we are intending to send a team from Coromandel Valley. Consent forms are available either from the Chess Club or the Front Office, but need to be returned with the entry fee by Thursday 15th of September.
Last week some of our Year 5 and 6 students competed in the SA Schools Orienteering Relay Championships. Nineteen schools attended the event, which was held at Kensington Park Reserve on an unseasonably beautiful, sunny day.
Students ran the relay in teams of two. The first runner navigated a 2.2km course, before tagging the second runner who then navigated a different course of the same length. The results were calculated from their combined times.
Students have been learning about orienteering in PE and many of them have gone on to hone their map-reading skills at other orienteering events and were confident of doing well at the Relay Championship.
All our students should be congratulated on doing a great job!
In the boys’ primary school team category, we managed to take out the Championship – a fantastic result in our first year in the competition!
A special congratulations to Flynn F and Kalem W, who were the fastest primary school team and were each awarded a first-place medal. The boys were in a neck and neck battle with a team from Echunga. The final sprint to the finish line proved the difference, with our boys finishing with a time of 30:20, two seconds ahead of their rivals.
Mr De Lyster
After months of lunch time training and playing matches against other schools, our boys’ netball team found themselves one of four remaining teams in the competition - earning the right to defend our double state title in the finals series at Netball SA Stadium.
The series started with the four schools competing in a round robin tournament to decide which two teams would play in the grand final. We lost our first game to Stella Maris 13-16 and knew we had to beat the other two teams to make it. We settled in our second game and beat Pulteney 22-16. In our third game, against Norwood, we were behind at half-time. But thanks to a great second half, we came back to win with a score of 13-10.
We had secured our spot in the grand final but still had to beat a very strong Stella Maris. The two teams switched leads several times in a thrilling, high-scoring match. We gave it our all but unfortunately in the end we narrowly lost with a score of 23-25.
Our boys should be extremely proud of themselves. They played their best throughout the competition and with good sportsmanship. Although they were understandably disappointed to not take out the title, second-best team in the state is still a great achievement!
A big thanks to the Year 6 girls netball team, who helped with the boys’ training and provided a quality team for the boys to practise against over many lunch times. Thanks also to all the parents who have supported the team at matches. I’m very proud of this group of boys for how hard they’ve worked, their good sportsmanship and what they have achieved.
The players: Caiden G, Ethan P, Fletcher H, Fletcher R, Flynn F, Kade H, Kalem W, Leo K, Oliver B, Quincy K.

Millie Forgan (year 2) has been competing in level 3 gymnastics competitions over the last month. She has won her two individual competitions and she and her team mates placed second in the teams competition.
She has State Championships in a couple of weeks and hopes to take her current form through to that competition as well.
Congratulations and good luck Millie!
Our fantastic U9 Soccer Team took part in the Southern Districts Junior Soccer Carnival this week, under floodlights on a somewhat muddy pitch! The competitive team played four matches over two hours against local teams; winning two, losing one and one match ending all square. As always, the team played well together, all playing in a variety of positions and showing excellent comradery throughout.
Well done team, a fantastic effort with two much deserved wins. Thank you also to our fantastic coaches Angelica and Adam, we couldn't have attended without you.
