Thank you to our Fantastic Volunteers!
This week is National Volunteer Week across Australia. This is an important time to acknowledge the efforts of parents and friends who volunteer their time and energy to support our school in so many ways. Whether it’s helping in the canteen, assisting in the classroom, coordinating or coaching sports, organising fundraisers, joining excursions, participating in the governing council, staffing the uniform shop, participating in our Learning Assistance Program, Kids Hope, coordinating Book Club or supporting special interest areas – your efforts and support make a huge difference.
Mother’s Day Special Morning/Gift Stall
Well done to our Reception students and their teachers for providing a special morning, sharing gifts with mums and performing a Mother’s Day song.
We would like to extend our thanks to all the parents who helped out at our recent Mother’s Day stall. Your time and effort made all the difference in helping students find a special gift for their mums and special people. We hope that all the mums in our school community had a wonderful Mother’s Day and felt appreciated and loved.
National Walk Safely to School Day
On Friday, 10th May many Coro students participated in National Walk Safely to School Day, when all primary school children were encouraged to walk and commute safely to school.
Walk Safely to School Day is about considering our transport habits and trying to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around.
Students and families who walked to school were offered a fresh piece of fruit (kindly donated by Magarey Orchard) to help continue their healthy start to the school day. Well done to everyone that took part.
Entry to the Kiss & Drop Area
Did you know that the best time to avoid congestion, when picking up students, is around 3:20 pm? Did you also know that teachers are on duty at the Kiss & Drop area until approximately 3:30 pm, and school staff monitor all students until they are collected?
Please take a moment to look over the diagram below. It is important for everyone’s safety that we safely access the school grounds while not impeding the traffic flow on Main Road. At times you may need to keep circulating until the driveway is clear enough to enter. Under no circumstances should you wait in the bus stop, on Main Road, or queue up over the crossing. These actions impede the ability of pedestrians to cross safely and contravene road rules. It is a tricky time of day – driver courtesy goes a long way!
The following link will take you to an online workshop, developed by the Department for Education, about emotional regulation. It is very easy to access and understand, and provides excellent strategies and further resources for parents, families and teachers. I highly recommend it. It takes no more than an hour to complete, but a quick 5 minute scan is also valuable.

YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (YELP) EXCURSION
Youth Environmental Leadership Program Excursion to Glenthorne National Park
What a wonderful day of learning, in the sunshine!
Nine of the ten 2024 Youth Environmental Leaders attended the event hosted by Green Adelaide.
The students participated in a nature wander and watercolour paint with Nature Play SA and assisted in planting 855 plants with Greening Australia and the Friends of Glenthorne Group.
We also recorded some messages for Jane Goodall, to share at her 2024 visit to Adelaide. This video aims to provide Dr Goodall a very succinct snapshot of our youth's ideas, concerns and hope for the future.
We are looking forward to planting at school, surveying the local bird species and hosting the next partnership YELP session at our school in Term 3.
We thank parent volunteers Tae and Lizzy for their help on the day.

FROM OUR ENVIRONMENTAL TIRKANTHI LEADERS
Did you know that we have a Tirkanthi learning trail at Coro Primary School. There are stones with native animals carved into them, at different places around the school. If you scan the QR codes, there are different activities to do, the Kaurna names of the animals to learn and information to read.

YEAR 5 HISTORY OF ADELAIDE EXCURSION
On the 6th of May the year 5s, went on an excursion to the busy, busy city. We enjoyed our experience on the Popeye along the Torrens River. Our tour guide told us cool facts about the history of the buildings on the river bank. Our tour on the Popeye started at the Convention Centre and looped all the way to the back of the zoo. Some of us could even see the bats! After our Popeye trip we caught the bus to the West Terrace Cemetery. We split into groups and looked for the graves of some very important people to S.A who we researched about. We walked around to find them and when we saw the graves we read some information on a plaque that was in front of the grave. And boy, we have never seen so many war memorials! After all of that we had some lunch, hopped on the bus and went back to a normal day. We all enjoyed our trip and visiting the city.
On Monday sixth of May the year five classes went on an excursion for our unit of inquiry. On the excursion we went on the Popeye, a boat that goes up and down the Torrens River, and we went to the West Terrace Cemetery. On Popeye the man operating it told us about the landscape on the riverbank and all of the buildings. Did you know that there is going to be another Adelaide hospital? It will be one of three hospitals on the Adelaide Plains. After that we took the bus to the West Terrace Cemetery to look at the graves of people that were important to South Australia.

On the 6th of May the year 5s went on excursion to the West Terrace Cemetery and went on the Popeye, which is a boat on the River Torrens. When we went on the Popeye, the captain told us many interesting facts such as people used to swim laps of the River Torrens. When we went to the cemetery, we looked for the graves of the people who were important to SA that we had researched.

On the 6 of May the year fives went on an excursion to the Popeye and the West Terrace Cemetery. On the Popeye we drifted along the River Torrens which in Kaurna is Karrawirra Pari. The captain of the Popeye told us about the history of South Australia, like that some people used to swim laps of the river. When we went to the Cemetery we looked at the people’s graves that we had researched, like Mary Colton and Ethel Davidson. Also when we went to the cemetery we looked at all the army graves. When we were at the cemetery we didn’t know where the people’s graves were, so we had to walk around the whole cemetery.

Every Monday is our Lunch Club and the Children’s University participants are able to earn hours towards their graduation. So far the children have been learning how to draw an Island picture, Superhero Mums, a cartoon tulip and the children have asked to do some origami and paper planes in the upcoming weeks.
Lunch club on 13th May was attended by Emma Scott, our Children’s University Coordinator, the children were involved in a STEM activity using Domino’s. The children had to complete a challenge using the dominos and various other components. They completed this in groups. It was great to see many Children’s University participants and other students involved and having fun.
‘Educational Explorer Award’
Two students each term will be selected for the Educational Explorer Award. These students have challenged themselves with a range of new and interesting learning activities. The students for term 1 are Clancy 1P with 19 hours and Adeline 6J with 6.5 hours.
Well done to all of the Cross Country runners who competed at the School Sport SA District Carnival at Belair National Park.

Congratulations to Jett, who finished 4th in his age group. He has been invited to represent our district at the State Championship event at Oakbank Racecourse next month.
All of our runners showed great effort and should be proud of their achievements.
A big ‘thank you’ to Carman and Richard for assisting with marshalling throughout the morning.

SCHOOL SPORT SA NETBALL CARNIVAL
SCHOOL SPORT SA BOYS NETBALL
Last week, our boys knockout netball team competed in the School Sport SA netball carnival. We started the day with 3 minor round games, all of which we won easily:
Coromandel Valley defeated Craigburn 12-3
Coromandel Valley defeated Clapham 20-3
Coromandel Valley defeated Highgate 13-5
After that, we played in our first final game, which we also won convincingly:
Coromandel Valley defeated St Anthony’s 18-0
Having won that game, we progressed to the next final, which was closer, but still a rather one-sided affair:
Coromandel Valley defeated Edwardstown 11-6
Finally, we made it to the grand final, which we played against Stella Maris. Both teams were very evenly matched, and it was a close game throughout, but unfortunately, we narrowly lost:
Stella Maris defeated Coromandel Valley 8-6
This means that our boys were runners-up in the carnival. But more importantly, the carnival was just the beginning of the State-wide Schools (Knockout) competition and 14 schools have now been eliminated. Only the top two teams for the day get to progress to the next round. So, our journey continues, and we look forward to a re-match with Stella Maris in the near future.
A big ‘Thank you’ to the parents who came out to support us and helped with transport, scoring, and cheering the boys on.
SCHOOL SPORT SA GIRLS NETABLL
Last week, our year 5/6 girls knockout netball team competed in the School Sport SA Netball Carnival at Netball SA. It was a brilliant day of support and success.
Our girls team played three minor round games and were pleased to win all of them.
The girls then set off to play against Edwardstown in our first final and lost to them in a close match.
In our last game for the day, we fought hard and ended up drawing with Flagstaff Hill Primary School. Due to the draw, we are awaiting our final placing for the day, but the girls should be very proud of themselves for the effort and teamwork shown on the day.
Thank you very much to the parents who came out to show their support, transport and score. Days like this cannot happen without help and was greatly appreciated.
On Friday 10th May, eight Coro students competed in the School Sport SA Team’s Mountain Bike Championships. A perfect day with lots of sunshine and dust and some very tired boys by the end.
In a wonderful display of skill, teamwork, and determination CVPS clinched first place in the 2024 Championships. Coro entered 3 teams, a total of 8 riders, two Year 6 teams and one Year 5 team.
Held at Craigburn Farm Recreation Park, the event brought together schools from all across South Australia with 78 teams competing in the 2 hour race. The course was a mix of uphill and down hill, taking an average of ten to eleven minutes to complete each lap. Teams were tasked with completing as many laps as possible within the 2 hour time limit.
Well done to our Yr 6 boys team of Beau, Darcy and Miles who finished 1st from 78 teams. The boys completed 11 laps in the 2 hour time limit with a total team riding time of 01:58:32 and an average lap time of 10:46.
Our second Yr 6 team including Joseph and Jake finished 8th from 78 teams. An outstanding result considering they only had 2 riders, meaning less break time between each lap. They completed 10 laps in the 2 hour time limit with a total team riding time of 01:56:17 and an average lap time of 11:37.
Our Yr 5 boys team of Ethan, Noah and Mack finished 40th from 77 teams. The boys completed 9 laps in the 2 hours with a total team riding time of 01:59:30 and an average lap time of 13:16.
Thank you to the families for supporting our team at this event.
