Welcome back to the 2022 school year. We hope you enjoyed the holiday break.
The start of this year has been quite different with the staggered return to school. We would like to thank the students, staff and families for their support and commitment to ensure a smooth transition with face-to-face learning for our Receptions and Year 1s, and home learning for our Year 2-6 students.
It was great to see our very eager brand new receptions enjoying school on their first day. We welcome all new families to our school community and look forward to sharing exciting learning opportunities throughout the year.
We have started 2022 with 463 students in 18 classes, with 3 new reception classes. A very special welcome to our 61 new reception students;

Class teachers will send out information about the evening outlining times, where to access the presentation and how to ask questions.

- Years 4 - 6 will hold separate Zoom meetings
- Year 4 at 5pm
- Year 5 at 5:20pm
- Year 6 at 5:40pm
Each presentation will allow for questions afterwards, but of course you can eMail your child's class teacher/s and ask questions at any time, including before the session.
The annual AGM will follow the online Acquaintance Night at 6pm Tuesday 22nd February in the library, and can also be accessed online.
GOVERNING COUNCIL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Welcome returning and new parents to Coromandel Valley primary school in 2022. I am your friendly neighbourhood Governing Council Chairperson and I’m here to encourage you to join the Governing Council in 2022. Below is a snapshot of everything you might want to know about Governing Council and why it’s important to the running of our school, and the success of our kids.
Who is on Governing Council?
Up to 17 elected parents, the principal, 1 staff and 1 parent club representative. This includes a Chairperson and Deputy Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, as well as a number of sub-committees like Finance, Canteen, OSHC, Parents and Friends, Sports and others as required. If you’re not in one of the 4 main positions above, you are considered an ‘ordinary member’ but don’t let the name fool you, you are super important to the running of the school.
What do you do on Governing council?
All sorts of important decisions regarding the school and the kids. We employ non-teachers of the school, including input on hiring decisions like the new Principal who will be appointed later this term. We can enter into contracts, approve new construction and use of funds, facilities and services to enhance the education, care, safety and health and wellbeing of the children. Like the decision to bring on Murphy in 2021, and the many improvements to the schoolyard this year. We also set the direction and vision of the school and strategic planning/policies like our strong commitment to the amazing IB program.
Why do we need this?
To involve parents and the school community and ensure that the cultural and social diversity of the community is considered. We make sure there is oversight on changes or improvements, and ensure we stay as one of the top 20 Schools in SA! Go us! We’re looking for all types, backgrounds, genders and viewpoints, reception parents through to year 6 graduating parents… the more the merrier.
What’s the commitment?
2 meetings per term for about 90 minutes. Meetings are held at the school on Tuesdays in week 3 and 8 of each term, from 5:30-7pm. 100% attendance is not a requirement, but apologies are expected and we are seeking parents who can commit to the meetings more often than not- as we do need to have a certain number of members present each time to hold the meeting.
It seems like a lot?
It’s not, for most ordinary members, you’ll attend to have input on decisions, and greenlight any major changes that the school leadership or committee proposes. You get to keep your finger on the pulse, and make sure our school stays as amazing as it is. Our school has the most wonderful community and culture, and we want to make sure that continues, especially with the new principal incoming. The Governing Council forms a pillar of support for the Leadership team at the school.
I’m keen, what do I need to do?
You’ll need to nominate yourself here: https://www.coromandps.sa.edu.au/governing-council, and ideally attend the AGM in Week 4 (22/2/21) at 6PM in the library or online. You can nominate yourself, or team up with another parent and nominate each other! The next Governing council meeting will be in week 8 of Term 1. You will need to have 2 doses of the Covid Vaccine, as per current Department Advice, to attend in person.
I’ve got more questions, or I just want to chat to someone first?
Absolutely! You can call me on 0467 633 630 for a chat, message me on the Parents and Friends Page, or occasionally catch me at the drop off outside 1TT (near the veggie patch).
Sam Neville, CVPS Governing Council Chairperson
During week 3 (or during the first 2 weeks for our Receptions and Year 1s) all classes will be exploring the same central idea to help establish positive learning environments where all are valued:
Building quality relationships shapes learning communities.
An inquiry into:
- Ourselves as learners.
- How we learn with and from each other.
- Rights and responsibilities within our classroom and school community.
We will be sharing some of our inquiries at the week 6 sharing Assembly which will be livestreamed for families.
On Friday we were fortunate enough to welcome Ben Burnard from the Department for Education to talk with us about interoception. This interesting word is a new one for some. It's all about being aware of the feelings and sensations in our bodies, and how these connect to our emotions and ability to regulate. It is recognised that, in addition to the five 'old' senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell) humans have three 'additional' senses: Proprioception (where our bodies are in space), Vestibular (balance) and Interoception (noticing and naming feelings within the body)
Staff were really invested in engaging with this new approach. We are investigating how we can explore these ideas across the school because evidence suggests there are significant benefits for all students in terms of improving readiness to learn. These activities take very little time (3-5 minutes at a time) and work best when accessed regularly (several times a day).
If you're interested in learning more about interoception, please check out this information on the DfE website:
PEDAL PRIX TEAM MANAGER NEEDED
We are still looking for a new PEDAL PRIX Team Manager so that we can continue this exciting school venture. If you are keen to be a part of this program please contact by emailing karen.hayes453@schools.sa.edu.au or by calling the school on 82783693 to discuss further.
We have some enthusiastic Year 6 students who simply can't wait for their turn to take part in this sport. However, Pedal Prix can't go ahead without a coordinator (or two)...
Megan and Larry Resch have been managing our school Pedal Prix team for many years, but will be handing the baton on to someone else in 2022. They will happily hand over all information and provide initial guidance for the new coordinator. School staff are able to provide support with fitness training at school.
What are you waiting for? Get on your bike! Put your hand up for this rewarding position today!
Are you passionate about education and the positive development of our school community?
This year we are seeking a parent representative from each year level to meet once per term to explore topics relating to education and family engagement.
This new group will support school leadership and the Governing Council to build greater links with the parent community and develop strategies to enhance understanding of learning approaches.
Please email me if you are interested in joining to this new initiative kate.odriscoll722@schools.sa.edu.au
Welcome back to another year of healthy snacks and tasty lunches at the Coro Canteen!
Our canteen is open for lunches and snacks Monday, Thursday and Friday. It's a great way for students to practise speaking to others and using money; please consider sending a small amount of money with your child, or ordering their lunch through QKR.
If you have some spare time on these days, don't hesitate to contact Carly:
Carly.Talbot224@schools.sa.edu.au
We would love to see some new people volunteer in the canteen, as well as welcoming back our regulars!
