On Friday we were fortunate enough to welcome Ben Burnard from the Department for Education to talk with us about interoception. This interesting word is a new one for some. It's all about being aware of the feelings and sensations in our bodies, and how these connect to our emotions and ability to regulate. It is recognised that, in addition to the five 'old' senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell) humans have three 'additional' senses: Proprioception (where our bodies are in space), Vestibular (balance) and Interoception (noticing and naming feelings within the body)

Staff were really invested in engaging with this new approach. We are investigating how we can explore these ideas across the school because evidence suggests there are significant benefits for all students in terms of improving readiness to learn. These activities take very little time (3-5 minutes at a time) and work best when accessed regularly (several times a day).
